Mozilla is going to Add Do-not-track Feature to Firefox

Mozilla has decided to add a do-not-track feature to their web browser Firefox, which will prevent websites and advertisers from tracking a user's actions online.

Once activated through the settings, this feature would broadcast a do-not-track message to each website that a user visits. However, it still depends upon the owners of those websites or advertising companies whether or not they choose to collect user data.

Microsoft had a similar feature in the older versions of Internet Explorer, but had to remove it because it was having a negative impact on the business of online advertisers. Google is expected to implement something similar in their Chrome web browser, but it won't be built-in and would require third-party software.

While Mozilla's tool would be pretty useful to users in maintaining their privacy, the fact that it depends upon online services to go against their best interests and not collect your data makes us doubt its effectiveness.

Mozilla Blocks Skype Toolbar Add-on

Mozilla has announced to block the official Skype Toolbar add-on for Firefox, which comes bundled with the Skype installer. Mozilla says that this add-on is causing browser crashes and slows down certain processes by up to 300 times.

The Skype toolbar add-on is installed automatically to all user profiles of Firefox when a user installs or updates the Skype application. Users can use this toolbar to call directly to the numbers displaying on the web pages using Skype. Mozilla describes, "The current shipping version of the Skype Toolbar is one of the top crashers of Mozilla Firefox 3.6.13, and was involved in almost 40,000 crashes of Firefox last week. [...] We’ll add all versions of the Skype Toolbar to the Firefox Blocklist for all versions of Firefox.".

India Develops Android Lapatop at 1500 for School

Gadget Guru, the gadget show by NDTV had interviewed Kapil Sibal, the Human Resource and Development minister about their very much rumored tablet PC that they were developing for a very low price. And its now confirmed that the product is going to be released soon, as the prototype presented by them was perfectly working. And Kapil Sibal said that it’s going to cost just $35 i.e. INR 1500.

Here are a few things about the tablet device -

• Its based on android platform, and the performance is excellent, with all the features similar to the android devices presently sold in the market.
• It has a virtual keyboard on the screen itself, which says it has a touchscreen with the resistive interface.
• The connectivity is through Wi-fi
• Camera – There is a camera on the back side of the device, which can help in capturing videos and taking pics.
• The apps in android supports documents and plays videos and presentations.
• There is a SIM card slot, along with a Flash card reader, and 2 USB slots, which are all the advantageous features when you compare to one of the biggest tablet devices around – iPad.

These tablet PCs are being made for students of various universities in India initially, and later would be available globally. But they are not going to be sold in the retail market. Around 1 million pieces would be launched and distributed in the colleges. Right now its with Android but later it might come in with Windows CE as Kapil says, Microsoft were interested in the project too.

Unlike many other rumors, this was a real news as the NDTV guys had tested the prototype and it has worked well with no bugs.

Facebook calls Roger Ebert's blog 'abusive content'

Roger Ebert, movie critic, cancer survivor and undeniable king of the Twitter bon mot, publically debuted his new prosthetic jaw on a blog post Facebook blocked as "abusive content."

Ebert, who returns to TV Friday with the premiere of his PBS show, "Ebert Presents at the Movies," lost his jaw in 2006 during his battle with thyroid cancer. "After surgery, I studiously avoided looking at myself in a mirror," Ebert writes in the blog post, though he has been candid about his radically changed appearance, most famously appearing last year on the cover of Esquire magazine.

Titled "Leading with my chin," the Jan. 19 blog post details Ebert’s two–year journey with David J. Reisberg, a specialist in facial reconstruction, in the development of the jaw prosthetic. The post includes images, though none of a medically graphic nature.

In a note introducing the blog post, as well as its absence, Ebert writes on his Facebook page:

According to Facebook’s Help section, the social network identifies the following types of behavior as abusive:

• Feature overuse: There are limits to restrict the rate at which you can use features on the site. Overusing features is not allowed because it may make other people feel annoyed or unsafe.

• Unwanted contact: Our systems detect when friend requests you send to others are being ignored at a high rate and volume. Using Facebook to contact many people you don't know is not allowed because it may make them feel threatened, harassed, or unsafe.

Facebook is looking into the matter, according to a spokesperson for the social networking site who responded to Technolog via e-mail. Attempts to contact Ebert are unsuccessful at the time of this post, which will be updated as information unfolds.

GOOGLE BANGLADESH SITE HACKED

Hackers have broken into the Bangladesh site of leading search engine Google, internet service experts said Saturday evening.

The site is inaccessible from some ISPs, as their DNS settings have been hacked.

Visitors to the site are seeing a defaced landing page rather than the usual search site.

Users can at times view the google.com.bd homepage due to the cache on their browser, but the page entertains no search.

Attempts to access the site by users are rebounded with message reading, “Google Bangladesh OwN3D by TiGER-M@TE.”

“The site has definitely been hacked,” said Pradip Dey, chief technical officer of ADN, a leading ISP.

“A couple of other ISPs have also got similar complaints from their clients,” he said.

Earlier, privately managed International Internet Gateway operator, Mango Teleservices, said they can enter google.com.bd.

“I can access it from here. But, many are calling us about this problem.”

Facebook is NOT Shutting Down March 15 [UPDATE: CONFIRMED]

There's a silly rumor exploding on the Internet this weekend, alleging that Facebook is shutting down on March 15 because CEO Mark Zuckerberg "wants his old life back," and desires to "put an end to all the madness."

[UPDATE] We have official confirmation from Facebook Director of Corporate Communications Larry Yu that the rumor is false. We asked him via e-mail if Facebook was shutting down on March 15, to which he responded, "The answer is no, so please help us put an end to this silliness."

Let's think about this for a minute. Would Facebook announce a shutdown just a few days after announcing a round of funding, consisting of $450 million from Goldman Sachs and $50 million from Russian investment firmDigital Sky Technologies, on a valuation of $50 billion?

The spurious report was started by a site to which we refuse to link, known for its reports of impending attacks of alien spaceships and false reports of a Michelle Obama pregnancy.

The fact that this absurd hoax spread so efficiently makes us wonder: Will people believe anything?

Apple’s iPad Business Now Bigger Than MacBook Business. Next Up: Entire Mac Business

Apple had a lot of big numbers to share during their Q1 2011 earnings today. And while the biggest unsurprisingly belonged to the iPhone, the iPad numbers are also very, very impressive. How impressive? The iPad business is already a bigger business than Apple’s portable computer business. That includes MacBooks, MacBook Pros, and MacBook Airs. And it’s within spitting distance of surpassing Apple’s entire Mac business in terms of revenue.

Last quarter, Apple sold 7.33 million iPads. Broken down, they made just over $4.6 billion off of the product for the quarter. That puts it ahead of the $3.69 billion the MacBook business made for Apple during the same time frame.

Twitter hack opens popups, causes havoc

A new way to cause mischief quickly spread through short-messaging service Twitter Tuesday morning before the site could fix the problem, as mysterious "tweets" of blocked-out text propagated themselves and caused popup windows to open.

Shortly before 10 a.m. (1400 GMT), Twitter said on its "safety" feed on the site that the attack has been "fully patched" and no longer works.

Yahoo Turns To The Enemy To Simplify User Registration

“Yahoo is poised to let people use their Google Inc. and Facebook Inc. identities to sign on to Yahoo,” says this article from earlier today.

In fact Yahoo has let users create new accounts on Flickr with their Google credentials since last summer. It’s been tested as part of an internal Yahoo project to spur user signups. A lot of people apparently bail out during the account creation process at various Yahoo sites. Part of the problem is that the process is lengthier than it needs to be because you’re also effectively signing up for a Yahoo email account, too. Even if you never use that account. There’s so much spam with email that there are a lot of extra steps with account creation.

Delhi feels tremors as magnitude 7.4 quake hits Pakistan

Several people were jolted out of their sleep and some ran out of their homes as tremors were felt in Delhi and other parts of northern India following an earthquake measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale that hit Pakistan early Wednesday. The earthquake hit few minutes before 2 pm. The epicentre was in southwest Pakistan, said the Indian Meteorological Department.

Tremors of the quake were felt in Delhi, Jaipur, Barmer, Ganganagar and Jaisalmer in Rajasthan and parts of Haryana.

T-Mobile Shows Off The Features Of Honeycomb In This Series Of Videos

Courtesy of T-Mobile and its newly announced G-Slate tablet by LG, several videos showing off Google’s new tablet-only OS have surfaced. Honeycomb will power the next generation of Android tablets, and it appears to offer some huge benefits over previous versions of the OS, which were designed with smartphones in mind. We really like what we’ve seen from Honeycomb so far, and we can’t wait to see more on the show floor.
